About the League
A truly challenging face-to-face trivia experience, the Canadian Inquisition Trivia League is a league of teams who compete Monday nights at various Toronto pubs. The Inquisition league has been operating in Toronto for more than 30 years, and – post-pandemic – is rebooted, rebuilding and adding new teams.
Canada’s most eclectic league – run by the players – the Inquisition League’s ranks have included former Jeopardy contestants (recently Toronto’s 13-game champion Ray Lalonde), erstwhile Reach For The Top players, journalists, techs, editors, students, academics, comics, musicians, authors and experts in every category.
We invite you to join us. Put together a team of five, and find a “home pub” that’s suitable and willing to serve as a regular Monday night venue (we can help with that if needed).
Contact us directly, or via our Facebook page, and we’ll supply the quizmasters and questions. Alternatively, we can set you up as a sub on an existing team, or connect you to other players looking to start their own.
Currently these pubs are hosting games:
- The Artful Dodger, 10 Isabella St., 416-964-9511
- Duke of York, 39 Prince Arthur Ave., 416-964-2441
- Gabby’s (Danforth), 729 Danforth Ave., 416-405-8100
- Jason George, 100 Front St. E., 416-363-7100
- Prenup Pub, 191 College St., 416-506-4040
The league currently has 13 teams. Each season one team sits out from play to write, run, and organize the games. Traditionally the other teams have been grouped into two divisions, which we are resuming this season. The two divisions are named the Torquemada and the Jaworski, and teams are promoted or relegated between the divisions after each season. New teams always start in the Jaworski Division.
Each team has five players. That is, five people can play at a time, but most teams have a few extra players who fill in when someone can’t make it. A team can play with fewer if it can’t find five people on a particular night.
We divide the year into three seasons, each usually 10 games long, starting in January, May, and September. Games currently start at 7:30 pm sharp, and are played on every Monday during the season, except holidays.
Each season starts with a Captains’ Meeting where issues such as rule changes can be decided on, and ends with a Final game for the league championship. With two divisions in the league once again, the Final involves three teams playing in a single game. One of these (the wild-card team) is the one that scored the most points in games through the season; the others are the top team in each division’s standings when the wild-card team is excluded.
